Dr. James Andrews performs elbow surgery on Red Sox's Brandon Workman: 5 things to know

James Andrews, MD, performed elbow surgery on Red Sox pitcher Brandon Workman, according to a SB Nation report.

Here are five things to know:

 

1. Mr. Workman decided try to avoid surgery earlier in the season and instead opted for a platelet-rich plasma injection to aid his injured right elbow.

 

2. However, the need for surgery presented itself, and Mr. Workman will now likely miss games this year.

 

3. Dr. James Andrews is one of the founding members of Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Ala.

 

4. He is the co-founder of the American Sports Medicine Institute, a nonprofit institute focused on injury prevention, education and research in orthopedic and sports medicine.

 

5. Dr. Andrews also received the 2014 Robert E. Leach Mr. Sports Medicine Award at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's Annual Meeting in Seattle.
