7 things to know about America's fittest city: Washington D.C.

As reported yesterday, Washington, D.C., topped American College of Sports Medicine and Anthem Foundation's American Fitness Index.

 

Here are seven things to know about the population health of Washington, D.C., according to the American Fitness Index:

1. 73 percent of respondents reported being involved in any physical activity or exercise in the last 30 days.

 

2. 24.3 percent of the area met the CDC guidelines for aerobic activity.

 

3. Washington, D.C. was considered excellent in terms of walking score, park units per capita, farmers' markets per capita and percent of city land as parkland.

 

4. 32 percent consume two or more fruits per day.

 

5. 17.6 percent consume three or more vegetables per day.

 

6. 13.5 percent currently smoke.

 

7. The death rate per 100,000 for diabetes decreased from 21.5 to 16.9 since 2009.

 

ACSM, the Indiana University School of Family Medicine and a panel of health and physical activity experts developed the methodology to analyze U.S. Census data, as well as data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, The Trust for the Public Land City Park Facts and other existing research data.
