X2 Bio helps Seahawks make concussion call in Super Bowl

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

During the third quarter of the Super Bowl, Seattle Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril took a hard shot from a New England Patriots player and laid motionless on the turf. To protect Mr. Avril, the team put him through an examination with a new kind of software, Forbes reports.

The program, developed by Seattle-based X2 Bio, asked team physicians to evaluate Mr. Avril's memory, cognition and balance — the data from that examination was then cross-referenced by the software through a cloud-based database of previous examinations in real-time.

The ease, speed and reliability that the software facilitates as it makes its comparison is what protects players with head trauma, officials with X2 Bio say.

The software is also being used in the NHL as well as the MLS.
