6 Things to Know About Morbidity & Mortality Following Knee Arthroscopy

In a recent study published in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, researchers from the orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation department of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City examined the risk factors for postsurgical morbidity and mortality associated with knee arthroscopy.

The study examined 12,271 patients from the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Database.

 

The researchers found:

•    The overall complication rate was 1.6 percent.
•    The major morbidity rate was 0.76 percent.
•    The minor morbidity rate was 0.86 percent.
•    There was one patient death.
•    The most common major complication was the need for reoperation.
•    The most common minor complication was deep venous thrombosis or thrombophlebitis.
