Sentara Leigh Hospital Improves Outcomes for Joint Replacement Surgery Patients

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Physicians at Norfolk, Va.-based Sentara Leigh Hospital have developed a new protocol to combat low blood pressure in joint replacement surgery patients and thereby improve outcomes, according to a Sentara news release.
Low blood pressure can delay the recovery of joint replacement procedure patients following surgery. In a year-long study conducted at Sentara, nurses started giving IV fluids to patients at the earliest sign of low blood pressure.

According to the study, the number of knee and hip joint replacement patients whose conditions worsened due to low blood pressure after surgery reduced by more than 30 percent.

The findings were presented at the 33rd Annual National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses Conference in San Antonio, May 18-21.
