Study: PRFM Doesn't Promote Better Functional Outcomes in Shoulder Surgery

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Authors of an article published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine found that augmenting at-risk rotator cuff tears with platelet-rich fibrin matrix didn't improve re-tear rates or functional outcomes over traditional repairs. Researchers examined 37 patients with rotator cuff tears who underwent surgery for rotator cuff tears, 16 of which received PRFM during the procedure. Re-tear rates among the PRFM group were 56.2 percent, which was significantly higher than the control group. The functional outcome scores postoperatively were similar between the two groups, and there were two infections reported in the PRFM group.
