Dr. Lyle Micheli Receives "Mr. Sports Medicine" Honor From AOSSM

Lyle J. Micheli, MD, director of the division of sports medicine at Children's Hospital Boston, received the 2011 Robert E. Leach Mr. Sports Medicine award during the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's annual meeting, according to a hospital news release.

The recognition is given to surgeons who have made significant contributions to sports medicine and includes a $5,000 donation to the winner's charity. Dr. Micheli has served as the president of the American College of Sports Medicine and is currently the secretary general for the International Federation of Sports Medicine. He is also the attending physician for the Boston Ballet.

During his career, Dr. Micheli has authored more than 300 scientific articles and reviews relating to sports medicine, scoliosis and medical problems in dancers. He is currently researching prevention of sports injuries in children and shoulder dysfunction in adolescent patients.

Dr. Micheli earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital-Children's Hospital, both in Boston. His additional training includes a traveling fellowship for Berg-Sloat.
