Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Anthony Galea, MD, an orthopedic surgeon in Toronto, has agreed to cooperate with federal investigators on charges that he used human growth hormones when treating professional athletes, according to a report from The Vancouver Sun.

Dr. Galea pleaded guilty to using HGH, which is unapproved for use in the United States, to treat professional athletes. He faces three years in prison and a $250,000 fine. However, federal prosecutors will seek a lesser sentence because Dr. Galea agreed to cooperate.

Charges of conspiracy, possession of HGH with intent to distribute, smuggling and making false statements were dropped as part of a plea deal.
