Clarence L. Shields, MD, an associate clinical professor at the University of Southern California in the department of orthopedics, will be inducted into the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's Hall of Fame later this week at the organization's annual meeting, according to an AOSSM news release.
Dr. Shields spent most of his career in private practice at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, where he developed the Kerlan-Jobe Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. The program has more than 300 alumni.
During his career, Dr. Shields also served as the team physician for the Los Angeles Rams and medical director for Team HEAL, a non-profit foundation he created to provide comprehensive medical care and rehabilitation centers to underserved high school athletes. He previously served as president of AOSSM and was named the society's Mr. Sports Medicine in 2006.
Dr. Shields earned his medical degree from Creighton University and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center. He also served as captain in the United States Air Force.
