Here are 10 orthopedic surgeons who performed 12 surgeries on Major League Baseball players so far this season.

Jason Knapp, a pitcher for the Cleveland Indians, underwent his second shoulder surgery performed by David Altchek, MD, co-chief of sports medicine and shoulder service at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Dr. Altchek also performed arthroscopic debridement on Cleveland Indians outfielder Trevor Crowe's right shoulder.

James Andrews, MD, founder of Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Ala., performed surgery on Houston Astros pitcher Brandon Lyon for a damaged right bicep and shoulder. Earlier in the month, he performed surgery on Detroit Tigers pitcher Joel Zumaya's elbow.

Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain also called upon Dr. Andrews to perform his Tommy John surgery, and he may not pitch again until 2013. He also performed Tommy John Surgery on Red Sox Pitcher Rich Hill, who is expected to return to play in 12-14 months.

Thomas Clanton, MD, director of foot and ankle sports medicine at The Steadman Clinic, performed ankle surgery on Kendrys Morales, first baseman for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Nationals first baseman Adam LaRoche underwent shoulder surgery from Nationals team physician Weimi Doughuih, MD, after conservative treatment failed to stop his pain.

San Francisco Giants team physicians Larry Oloff, MD, and Ken Akizuki, MD, were joined by Mike Dillingham, MD, to repair three ligaments in Giants catcher Buster Posey's left ankle after he was involved in a collision at the plate.

Major League Baseball recently launched an investigation into the biologic treatment Joseph Purita, MD, used to help heal Yankees pitcher Bartolo Colon's shoulder and elbow. Some suspect Dr. Purita used human growth hormone, which is banned by the MLB, but he maintains the biologics used was a combination of bone marrow and body fat.

Arizona orthopedic surgeon Don Sheridan, MD, performed surgery on San Francisco Giants infielder Pablo Sandoval for a fractured hamate bone in his right hand.

Co-director of the Marina Spine Center in Marina del Rey, Calif., Robert Watkins, MD, performed surgery on Atlanta Braves pitcher Peter Moylan for a bulging disc in his lower back.
