PRP Effectiveness in Sports Medicine: Dr. Brian Cole Discusses

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Chicago Health recently published an article featuring orthopedic surgeon Brian Cole, MD, and his work with platelet-rich plasma treatment.

Dr. Cole is the section head of the Cartilage Restoration Center at Rush University Medical Center. He also serves as chairman of surgery at Rush Oak Park Hospital and a team physician for the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox.

During his career, Dr. Cole has used PRP to treat professional, amateur and youth athletes with promising results. Dr. Cole described how blood drawn from the patient is spun in a centrifuge and then re-injected into the patient's site of injury, torn tissue or surgical site.

While the PRP's effectiveness is still questioned in the literature, Dr. Cole told Chicago Health that physicians are looking at customization options for PRP and advocated for the use of PRP and some stem cell procedures in orthopedics.
