4 Things to Know About Periprosthetic Joint Infections & Mortality Risk

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Researchers from the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia recently published a study on periprosthetic joint infections and the risk of mortality in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery.

The researchers examined 436 patients with at least one surgical intervention due to periprosthetic joint infection in comparison to 2,342 patients undergoing revision surgery for aspect failure.

•    At 90 days, mortality rate was 3.7 percent in periprosthetic joint infection patients and 0.8 percent in aseptic revision patients
•    At one year, mortality rate was 10.6 percent in periprosthetic joint infection patients and 2 percent in aseptic revision patients.
•    At two years, mortality rate was 13.6 percent in periprosthetic joint infection patients and 3.9 percent in aseptic revision patients.
•    At five years, mortality rate was 25.9 percent in periprosthetic joint infection patients and 12.9 percent in aseptic revision patients.

The researchers concluded that the risk of mortality was five times higher in patients with periprosthetic infections than in patients undergoing revision arthroplasty for aseptic failure.
