Walnut Creek, Calif.-based John Muir Health announced that it has reduced postoperative complications for nearly 700 total knee replacement and total hip replacement patients by an average of 32 percent.
The project was aimed at improving the surgical process for patients by implementing a new standardized patient evaluation to identify potential risk factors for surgery and best practices to reduce them. For the study, a group of patients were seen and evaluated using a standardized medical process, and the results of the group were compared to a control group of patients who underwent the same types of surgeries before the standardized process was implemented.
The control group had a perioperative complication rate of 12.4 percent, which dropped to 8.45 percent for the group of patients who were evaluated using the standardized medical process.
