Here are 10 sports medicine physicians who have invented medical devices or hold medical patents. Chris Dougherty, DO (Dougherty Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Bentonville, Ar.). Dr. Dougherty is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who is fellowship-trained in arthroscopy and sports medicine. He has developed a patented clavicle nail to treat collarbone fractures. He also has a patent-pending double bundle ACL procedure to improve anatomic knee reconstruction. Dr. Dougherty developed the first and only Sports Medicine Fellowship Program for physicians in Arkansas. He teaches practicing surgeons how to perform arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. He received his osteopathic medicine degree at Kansas City University of Medicine and completed a residency at Oklahoma State University Medical Center. He then completed his fellowship at Kentucky Sports Medicine in Lexington. Dr. Dougherty has a staff appointment at Northwest Medical Center and is a member of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Osteopathic Association, Arkansas Orthopedic Society and American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine.

Richard Ferkel, MD (Southern California Orthopedic Institute, Van Nuys, Calif.). Dr. Ferkel is the director of the sports medicine fellowship program at Southern California Orthopedic Institute. He has invented numerous surgical devices, as well as a patented ankle-supporting shoe with a mid-sole attached to the top surface of the shoe. Dr. Ferkel has also published numerous articles regarding shoulder, knee, foot, ankle and sports medicine. He lectures extensively and has performed live surgery in Europe. He received his medical degree from Northwestern Medical School in Evanston, Ill., and gained orthopedic training at the University of California Los Angeles. He completed a fellowship in sports medicine and reconstructive knee and shoulder surgery at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute. Dr. Ferkel has worked with the U.S. Olympic teams, U.S. soccer team and is a consultant to the National Football League, Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association.

E. Marlowe Goble, MD (Salt River Orthopaedics, Afton, Wyo.). Dr. Goble is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and practices at Salt River Orthopaedics. He has a special interest in ACL reconstruction and meniscal allograft transplants, and he performed what may be the first minimally invasive knee replacement procedure. He holds more than 70 patents for various medical procedures and devices, including a method and apparatus for reconstructing a ligament. He also serves as the director of the Utah State University medical device testing laboratory in the department of animal science and is an adjunct professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of Utah. Dr. Goble received his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He then completed a surgical internship at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis and an orthopedic residency at the University of Utah. He completed his fellowship at the Slocum Clinic in Eugene, Ore. Dr. Goble has also had several other notable achievements including serving as a lead surgeon for Zimmer on the prosthetic ACL development and as Utah State University team physician.

Steven Harwin, MD (Beth Israel Medical Center, New York City). Dr. Harwin is the chief of adult reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee and director of the Total Joint Replacement Bloodless Surgery Program at Beth Israel Medical Center. During his more than 30-year career, he has invented and designed patented orthopedic devices. Dr. Harwin was a design consultant the Triathlon Total Knee Arthroplasty system and instruments, which was created to reproduce the knee's natural motion. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Harwin earned his medical degree at State University of New York Upstate Medical University Health Science Center in Syracuse and completed his residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. He also completed a traveling fellowship in hip and knee surgery in the United States, United Kingdom and Germany.

Heinz Hoenecke, MD (Scripps Clinic, La Jolla, Calif.). Dr. Hoenecke is an instructor in the sports medicine fellowship program at Scripps Clinic. He recently led a research team in developing a three-dimensional computer-animated shoulder stimulator to measure how much stress is put on muscles during various motions and to help physicians pre-plan procedures. He earned his medical degree at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Phoenix and completed his residency program at the University of Arizona Health Science Center in Tucson. He also completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the former Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo. Dr. Hoenecke is the head team physician for the San Diego Padres and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Association of North America.

Anthony Miniaci, MD (Cleveland Clinic Center for Sports Health). Dr. Miniaci is a staff physician at Cleveland Clinic's Center for Sports Health. His special interests include sports medicine, shoulder and knee arthroscopy and reconstruction, cartilage and implant joint resurfacing. He holds a patent for minimally invasive focal resurfacing devices for cartilage defects. Dr. Miniaci completed medical school at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, where he also completed a surgery internship and an orthopedic residency. He completed a sports medicine fellowship at Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood, Calif., and a shoulder and knee fellowship from Inselspital University Hospital in Bern, Switzerland. He's belong to or served on committees for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, American Shoulder and Elbow Society, Arthroscopy Association of North America and International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.

Kevin R. Stone, MD (The Stone Clinic, San Francisco). Dr. Stone is founder of The Stone Clinic and chairman of the Stone Research Foundation in San Francisco, which conducts research on advanced surgical techniques and tissue regeneration. Dr. Stone holds approximately 50 patents on inventions to improve healthcare. He's well-known for inventing Joint Juice, a glucosamine and vitamin C-based dietary supplement. He specializes in treatment of athletes and people with arthritis and focuses on knee and shoulder injuries and uses many minimally-invasive robotic techniques. He received his medical degree from Harvard University in Massachusetts for internal medicine and orthopedic surgery, and he completed a fellowship in knee surgery under J. Richard Steadman, MD. Dr. Stone is the co-founder of ReGen Biologics, a publicly traded medical device company focused on meniscus regeneration.

Raymond Thal, MD (Town Center Orthopaedic Association, Reston, Va.). Dr. Thal is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine and disorders of the shoulder, knee and elbow. He has more than 15 United State patents and 16 international patents for devices and instruments he invented for arthroscopic procedures.
His surgical expertise includes arthroscopic knee ligament reconstructions, shoulder stabilizations, rotator cuff repair, and shoulder and elbow disorders in the throwing athlete. Dr. Thal earned his medical degree from Loyola University of Chicago and continued there for orthopedic surgery residency. He then completed a fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy at the Orthopaedic Research of Virginia in Richmond. He served as the head team physician for the Washington Redskins from 2000 to 2008. He is a member of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.

Russell Warren, MD (Hospital for Special Surgery, New York). Dr. Warren has been surgeon-in-chief at Hospital for Special Surgery and is the attending orthopedic surgeon and professor of orthopedics at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He is also the emeritus surgeon-in-chief at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He has published over 250 scientific articles and has several patents for medical implants used in the shoulder and knee. For the past 20 years, Dr. Warren has been the New York Giants football team physician and is a member of the National Football Foundation board of trustees. Dr. Warren received his medical degree from the State University of New York Medical School in Syracuse. He completed his internship and surgical residency training at St. Luke's Hospital in New York, followed by an orthopedic surgical residency at HSS and a fellowship in shoulder surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Warren served as president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American Shoulder & Elbow Society.

Sherwin J. Wayne, MD (Orthopedic Sports Medicine & Spine Care Institute, St. Louis). Dr. Wayne is an orthopedic spine surgeon with a special interest in lumbar spine surgery. He invented a positioning device for lumbar spine surgery that has helped revolutionize surgical technique to improve operative exposure and minimize blood loss. He earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois School of Medicine and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at St. Louis University. His additional training includes a reconstructive orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation fellowship at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in Los Angeles. Dr. Wayne served as a team physician for local athletes for several years and is a member of the North American Spine Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
