13 Orthopedic Surgeons Recently Treating Professional Athletes

Here are 13 orthopedic surgeons who recently performed surgery on professional athletes. Hospital for Special Surgery's Answorth Allen, MD, performed knee surgery on New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin, who suffered a small meniscal tear in his left knee.

David Altchek, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, performed elbow surgery on Minnesota Twins pitcher Scott Baker, which turned into an ulnar collateral lateral ligament reconstruction after the medical team recognized damage to his UCL during the procedure.

Robert Anderson, MD, an orthopedic surgeon focused on foot and ankle procedures, performed ankle surgery on Denver Broncos tight end Julius Thomas, who may be able to return in time for training camp for the 2012-2013 season.

James Andrews, MD, founder of Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Fla., and San Francisco Giants team orthopedist Ken Akizuki, MD, performed ulnar collateral ligament repair on Giants relief pitcher Brian Wilson, who previously underwent the procedure in 2003.

Dr. Andrews also performed elbow surgery on pitcher Michael Kohn for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and elbow surgery on Oakland Athletics relief pitcher Joey Devine.

Phoenix Suns' Grant Hill recently had a knee scope performed by Thomas Carter, MD.

Washington Nationals team physician Wiemi Douogih, MD, performed a minor elbow surgery on Nationals pitcher Drew Storen, who is likely to spend two to four months out of play.

Southern California Orthopedic Associates physician Richard D. Ferkel, MD, performed ankle surgery on Cleveland Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson, who suffered a torn tendon in his left foot and ankle.

Hand specialist at the Cleveland Clinic Tom Graham, MD, performed wrist surgery on Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Sam Fuld, which will keep Mr. Fuld out of play for at least four months.

Brian McKeon, MD, and Drew Terrono, MD, surgeons at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, performed wrist surgery on Boston Celtics center Jermaine O'Neal, who re-aggravated a prior injury earlier this season.

Marc Philippon, MD, an orthopedic surgeon with The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo., performed hip surgery on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who has suffered from hip pain throughout this past NBA season.

Co-director of the Marina Spine Center in Marina del Rey, Calif., Robert Watkins, MD, performed spine surgery on Orland Magic's Dwight Howard, who suffered from a herniated disc.
