Properly fitting helmets can decrease the risk of losing consciousness after sustaining a concussion during football games, according to an American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine news release.
Researchers recently studied reports from 1,398 concussions collected by the National High School Sports-Related Injury Surveillance System and measured severity. The researchers found that when athletes wore properly fitted helmets, as reported by certified athletic trainers, they were 82 percent less likely to lose consciousness after sustaining a concussion.
Current data also indicates that helmet fit and air bladder lining may be associated with concussions and intracranial hemorrhage, according to the report.
