Maui Memorial's sole neurosurgeon may soon retire: 6 things to know

The only neurosurgeon at Wailuku, Hawaii-based Maui Memorial Medical Center is inching toward retirement, according to The Maui News.

Here are six things to know:

 

1. With the looming departure of neurosurgeon Thomas Rogers, MD, Maui Memorial physicians are raising concerns and saying that the medical center needs to hire two more neurosurgeons.

 

2. Maui Region Board Chairman Avery Chumbley commented "ideally" the medical center would have two neurosurgeons who rotate on-call hours.

 

3. Kaiser Permanente, the incoming operator of the medical center, did not say whether they will hire a new neurosurgeon.

 

4. Mr. Chumbley said Kaiser is looking for a second neurosurgeon, but emphasizes Maui is a tough recruitment area.

 

5. Dr. Rodgers treats head trauma and neck injuries as well as performs spine surgeries.

 

6. The Maui News was not able to reach Dr. Rodgers for comment.
