DePuy Synthes receives up to $260M US Department of Defense contract
DePuy Synthes, a Johnson & Johnson company, received a national contract from the U.S. Department of Defense for its orthopedic products. DePuy Synthes is contracted to supply up to $260 million worth of orthopedic products to the Defense Logistics Agency's electronic catalog of medical products.

Alphatec revenue drops 19.8% in Q1
Alphatec's first quarter fiscal year 2017 revenues dropped 19.8 percent, reaching $23.4 million, compared with the same period last year. Gross profit for the first quarter was $16 million and the gross margin was 68.3 percent. Operating expenses for the first quarter decreased by $7.8 million to $20.2 million, reflecting the impact of cost reduction initiatives including workforce reduction.

Dr. Kornelis Poelstra completes 200 spinal surgeries with Mazor X
Kornelis Poelstra, MD, founder of The Spine Center of Excellence at Sacred Heart on the Emerald Coast in Miramar Beach, Calif., performed 200 spine surgeries using the Mazor X system. Dr. Poelstra has a special interest in minimally invasive procedures, lateral interbody cages and reconstructive systems.

Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics to launch orthopedic, spine bundled payments
The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics, based in Bethesda, Md., partnered with Capital Blue Cross and other payers to develop bundled payments for seven orthopedic procedures. The group plans to finalize bundled payments for total knee, total hip, partial knee replacement, knee scopes, cervical spine fusion, anterior cruciate ligament procedures and rotator cuff surgery by the end of the year.

Partners, GE Healthcare launch 10-year AI-focused partnership
Boston-based Partners HealthCare and GE Healthcare have entered into a decade-long collaboration to develop and integrate artificial intelligence and deep learning technology across the healthcare continuum. The aim of the collaboration is to develop AI technology that can be implemented at every stage of a patient's journey through the healthcare system.

Anthem notifies Cigna merger deal is dead; won't pay break-up fee
On the morning of May 12, Anthem told Cigna the $54 billion merger deal between the two was dead. Anthem notified Cigna following its loss in a Delaware business court ruling, which denied Anthem's request for a preliminary injunction to deter Cigna from exiting the merger deal. Anthem also told Cigna it would not pay the $1.85 billion merger break-up fee.

TriHealth, Mayfield Brain & Spine to create neuroscience institute
Mayfield Brain & Spine and TriHealth, both based in Cincinnati, are working together to build the TriHealth Neuroscience Institute. The Neuroscience Institute will offer brain, head, neck, spine and advanced stroke care services. The institute, which will serve as a Center of Excellence, will leverage technology and facilities from Mayfield, TriHealth Physician Partners and TriHealth's neuroradiology and neuropathology departments.

North American artificial disc replacement market to double by 2023, hitting $614.5M
The North American artificial disc replacement market will likely double by 2023, according to GlobalData analysis. Valued at $274.6 million in 2016, analysts expect the market to jump to $614.5 million by 2023. The increasing number of degenerative spinal conditions as well as artificial disc replacement procedures' advantages over traditional spinal fusions will boost market growth.
