Duke's Dr. Michael Haglund inspires interest in medicine at early age with Uganda mission trips— 5 highlights

Durham, N.C.-based Duke University Hospital neurosurgeons invited Durham Nativity School students to travel with them on a medical trip to Uganda, according to abc 11.

Here are five highlights:

 

1. Eight students assisted the neurosurgeons in providing more than $10 million worth of neurosurgery supplies.

 

2. Michael Haglund, MD, PhD, a Duke neurosurgeon and professor, first went on a mission trip to Uganda a decade ago. He heads the mission trips.

 

3. Dr. Haglund sought out students at the Nativity School to boost interest in medicine at an early age, and began a leadership course at the school.

 

4. He hopes their work will increase the number of neurosurgeons in Uganda from the current five to 25 by 2025.

 

5. The medical mission trips have helped three neurosurgeons graduate in Uganda, with an additional seven well on their way.
