Determining best treatments for hip-spine syndrome patients — 4 thoughts

Spine

New York City-based NYU Langone Hospital for Joint Diseases researchers analyzed the similar symptoms between spine and hip pain, and best practices for treatment.

Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons published the paper.

Here are four thoughts:

1. Patients with hip-spine syndrome may experience delayed treatment, as they receive incorrect diagnoses because physicians are unsure of the pain source.

2. The article's authors suggest patients receive a complete physical examination inclusive of:

• Gait assessment
• Hip and back range of motion
• Posture
• Pelvic, lower limb and spinal alignment
• Atrophy
• Surgical scars
• Limb-length difference

3. Advanced imaging and diagnostic injections may also prove beneficial for accurate diagnoses.

4. Hip and spine pain are commonly the result of:

• Hip osteoarthritis
• Stress fracture
• Osteonecrosis of the hip
• Labral tear
• Disc herniation and pinched nerves
• Stenosis
• Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
