Zimmer Biomet to pay $30.5M in new settlement over old Biomet issues
Zimmer Biomet resolved an issue with the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Policies Act that has been ongoing for several years. Biomet was accused of paying bribes to healthcare providers in South America and China for business within their hospitals, violating the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act before Zimmer acquired the company. The company already agreed on a $17.3 million penalty payment and $5.4 million civil settlement, paid to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, related to the case, according to Reuters. Bonati Spine Institute opens Las Vegas location
Last week, Tampa, Fla.-based Bonati Spine Institute opened a location in Las Vegas. Alfred Bonati, MD, founded Bonati Spine Institute and opened the new location at an event that included around 200 people.

Surgeons rank as #1 highest-paying job in these 16 states
Yahoo! News lists the following 16 states where surgeons rank as the highest-paid occupation, on average: Nevada, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, New Jersey, Vermont, Kansas and Nebraska.

Implanet sees 46% spine activity boost in 2016
Bordeaux, France-based Implanet reported its fourth quarter 2016 and full-year 2016 results. Implanet saw a 45 percent jump in spine activity in 2016, compared to 2015, with spine sales reaching $4.39 million in 2016. In 2016, spine sales ($4.39 million) surpassed knee sales ($3.98 million) for the first time.

Augmented reality: Philips introduces new spine navigation technology
Philips, headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands, unveiled augmented reality surgical navigation technology for open and minimally invasive spine surgery. The AR technology builds off of the company's low-dose X-ray system, utilizing high-resolution optical cameras. Philips designed the AR-based navigation system to enhance procedure planning, tool navigation and implant accuracy.

Scripps Encinitas 1st in the West to perform spine surgery with Mazor X
Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas (Calif.) surgeons performed lumbar spinal fusion surgery utilizing the Mazor X robotic system. Neville Alleyne, MD, and Payam Moazzaz, MD, performed the procedure on Jan. 10, 2017. Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas possesses the only Mazor X system west of the Rocky Mountains, according to Voice & Viewpoint.

Midwest Fetal Care Center unveils new open surgery program for spine bifida treatment
The Michael and Ann Ciresi Midwest Fetal Care Center, based in Minneapolis, will now offer open fetal surgery. Research supports the theory that in-utero surgery can result in enhanced results for those with spine bifida, compared to traditional postnatal repair.

Global spinal fusion market to hit $9B by 2023
The global spinal fusion market is anticipated to reach $9 billion by 2023. Valued at $7.1 billion in 2016, the market will likely grow at a compound annual growth rate of 3.4 percent through 2023. The increasing number of degenerative spinal condition cases and more technological advancements in spinal fusion are driving the market, which spans 39 countries.
