Dr. Kern Singh to chair AAOS spine program committee for annual meetings
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons appointed Kern Singh, MD, spine program committee chair for the society's 2017 through 2020 annual meetings. In this position, Dr. Singh will coordinate the meetings' spine presentations and instructional course lectures as well as review all spine research submissions and select committee members.

MIS spine surgery market to grow at 7.6% CAGR to 2020
The global minimally invasive spine surgery market will likely grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.57 percent between 2016 and 2020, based on a ResearchMoz report. The market will see the increasing adoption of the MI sacroiliac joint fusion approach. A dearth of skilled MIS surgeons will serve as a detriment to market growth, however.

NASS & 'Spinal News International' partner to expand spinal knowledge
North American Spine Society and the industry newspaper Spinal News International struck a new collaboration. They are working together to produce a series of digital updates, which will keep readers informed about NASS' advocacy efforts, scientific research and event programming.

VA final rule allows APRNs to practice without clinical supervision; excludes CRNAs
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs issued a final rule that grants three types of advanced practice registered nurses full practice authority. The rule applies to certified nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists and certified nurse-midwives. However, the VA did not include certified registered nurse anesthetists in this list.

Dr. Richard Kube reports 12-month results of SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion study
Richard A. Kube, MD, of Peoria, Ill.-based Prairie Spine & Pain Institute, published a clinical study's 12-month results focused on Minnetonka, Minn.-based Zyga Technology's SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion. The study found 88 percent of patients experienced fusion at 12 months. At 12 months, average back pain decreased from 81.7 to 44.1.

Spine surgery start time impacts same-day discharge
A new study published in Spine examines surgery start times' impact on anterior cervical discectomy and fusion patients. Thirty-six percent of all patients were able to undergo same-day discharge. The researchers concluded performing ACDFs earlier in the day could increase the likelihood for same-day discharge.

Trends in the BMP market — spinal fusion has largest market share
The bone morphogenetic protein market is expected to grow over the next eight years, according to a Grand View Research report. The BMP market is expected to reach $644.6 million in 2024. The increase of spinal fusions, trauma and small bone surgeries will drive the increase over time.

Cleveland Clinic addressed physician burnout by offering a training session emphasizing relationship-centered communication. The eight-hour training session, called "Relationship: Establishment, Development and Engagement," included interactive didactics, video demonstrations as well as group practice components.
