Statistics on orthopedic spine surgeon compensation
The 2016 MGMA Provider Compensation and Production Report revealed orthopedic spine surgeon compensation, based on 2015 survey data. Total compensation averaged $777,262. Physician-owned practice compensation totaled $705,695, compared to hospital/integrated delivery system-owned practice compensation of $924,361. Total compensation for surgeons with 23 or more years in practice was $650,714.

Global MIS spine market to grow at CAGR of 7.6% to 2020
The global minimally invasive spine surgery market will likely grow between 2016 and 2020, based on a Technavio report. The market will witness a compound annual growth rate of 7.57 percent through 2020. More patients are seeking MIS spine care because of its greater accuracy, shorter hospital stays and reduced costs, as compared to open procedures.

Medicrea reaches milestone of 1k patient-specific UNiD Rod procedures
Surgeons have used Lyon, France-based Medicrea's patient-specific UNiD Rod technology in more than 1,000 procedures. The UNiD Rod is custom-designed to match the patient's unique spinal alignment, as well as align with the surgeon's preoperative plan. More than 110 orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons in the United States and Europe have utilized the UNiD Rods.

President-elect Donald Trump's HHS pick Dr. Tom Price talks providers' role in healthcare system
On the heels of President-elect Donald Trump naming Rep. Tom Price, MD, (R-Ga.), to lead the HHS, MedPage Today republished a 2014 interview with the orthopedic surgeon concerning his views on healthcare. Dr. Price said the healthcare industry faces obstacles in terms of patient advocacy as many "non-medical people" are making medical decisions, and that legislators and payers should play no part in medical decisions.

Mazor Robotics names Yuval Yanai to board of directors
Caesarea, Israel-based Mazor Robotics named Yuval Yanai to the company's board of directors, effective immediately. Mr. Yanai brings 30 years of medical device industry experience to Mazor. Mr. Yanai has a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and economics from Israel-based Tel Aviv University.

FDA clears Xtant Medical's Xsert Lumbar Expandable Interbody System
The FDA cleared Belgrade, Mont.-based Xtant Medical's Xsert Lumbar Expandable Interbody System. A titanium expandable interbody device, the Xsert System expands in-situ. Xtant is planning an initial product launch in mid-2017.

U.S. Surgeon General implores medical professionals to take active role in healthcare policy decisions
U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD, MBA, addressed the need for medical professionals to be more involved in healthcare policy-making decisions during a John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum event on Nov. 28 at Harvard Institute of Politics in Cambridge, Mass.
