Dr. Frank Vrionis to head Boca Raton Regional's Marcus Neuroscience Institute — 7 highlights

Boca Raton (Fla.) Regional Hospital named neurosurgeon Frank K. Vrionis, MD, PhD, the director of the Marcus Neuroscience Institute.

Here are seven highlights:

 

1. Dr. Vrionis will fulfill his new position on Oct. 1.

 

2. In his new role, he hopes to further research the causes of neurological diseases as well as develop new treatments.

 

3. He currently is the chief of neurosurgery at Moffitt Cancer Center and serves as a neurosurgery, orthopedics and oncology professor at the University of South Florida, both located in Tampa.

 

4. Dr. Vrionis wrote guidelines for the National Cancer Center Network for Spine and Brain Tumors.

 

5. Author of three books on brain and spinal tumors, Dr. Vrionis has also written 150 abstracts and 100 publications in journals such as Journal of Neurosurgery, European Spine Journal and Lancet Oncology.

 

6. Dr. Vrionis completed his skull-base surgery fellowship at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He earned his doctorate degree in brain tumor immunology from Duke University in Durham, N.C.

 

7. The $57 million Marcus Neuroscience Institute opened in 2014. The 56,000-sqaure-foot institute includes a 20-bed neuro intensive care and step-down unit, a post- anesthesia care unit and four operating rooms.
