Steven Cyr, MD, of San Antonio-based Orthopaedic & Spine Institute, dons a customized superhero costume to immerse children into the medicine world in terms they can understand, according to San Antonio Express-News.
Here are five highlights:
1. Dr. Cyr based his and his colleagues' costumes on comic books he authored to inform children about their bodies, science and medicine. Together, the superhero clan call themselves the OsteoCorps, based on his comic books.
2. The OsteoCorps team meets with groups of children between 10 times and 15 times a year, performing skits and passing out comic books and worksheets. The activities are all related to medicine, and are intended to diffuse any fear children have about physicians.
3. The OsteoCorps characters are based on Dr. Cyr's family, and they all possess superpowers to heal injuries.
4. A super-villain, named FraXure, also made his way into the mix.
5. Dr. Cyr has written two OsteoCorps comic books, with the third not far behind.
