Dr. Ben Carson rejects surgeon general post offer from Obama & Bush
In an interview on the Alan Colmes Show, a Fox News Radio show, former presidential candidate Ben Carson, MD, claimed he rejected offers from both President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush to serve as the country's surgeon general. Dr. Carson also noted he has no interest in the job if Republican nominee Donald Trump is elected. However, he will continue to advise Mr. Trump, if asked.

 

Stryker Q2 net sales jump 16.8% to $2.8B
Stryker reported overall 16.8 percent net sales growth in the second quarter of 2016 to $2.8 billion. The company's neurotechnology and spine business line reported a net sales growth of 9.3 percent. Spine sales for the second quarter hit $188 million, up only 1.1 percent over the same period last year.

 

Vanderbilt surgeons help perform Australia's 1st in-utero spinal surgery
Brisbane, Australia-based Mater Hospital and Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center surgeons successfully performed Australia's first in-utero spinal surgery. The 24-week-old baby was diagnosed with spina bifida, and a team of about 40 surgeons and nurses performed the in-utero surgery.

 

MedTech revenue up 73%; 34 ROSA robots sold in 2016
MedTech reported financial results for its fourth quarter and full year ended June 30, 2016, on the heels of Zimmer Biomet announcing plans to acquire majority stake in the company. The company reported a 73 percent increase in revenue for the full year 2016, from $7.2 million in 2015 to $12.3 million in 2016. MedTech sold 34 ROSA robots worldwide, including 22 robots in the United States, during fiscal year 2016.

Medtronic received the first-ever FDA clearance for cement-augmented pedicle screws in the CD Horizon Fenestrated Screws. The screw set, intended for patients with advanced spinal tumors in the thoracic and lumbar spine, is used with the HV-R Fenestrated Screw Cement, a polymethylemetacrylate cement intended for use at spinal levels where structural integrity isn't severely compromised.

 

Orthopaedic Associates, Upstate Spine & Neurosurgery Center plan to merge
Spartanburg S.C.-based Orthopaedic Associates and Upstate Spine & Neurosurgery Center in Spartanburg are merging, and together plan to build a $7.2 million facility in Spartanburg that will include an ambulatory surgery center. The newly merged practice will be called Carolina Orthopaedic & Neurological Associates.
