Spine

Michael Janssen, MD, founder of Denver-based Center for Spine and Orthopedics, has performed spinal procedures on several powerboat racing champions, according to Speed on the Water.

Dr. Janssen was involved in initial disc replacement clinical studies, and has performed more than 1,000 total disc replacements.

Here are four highlights of some powerboat racers Dr. Janssen has treated.

1. Bob Teague is an offshore powerboat racer who holds many championship titles. Dr. Janssen removed Mr. Teague's C5-6 disc after he found two bone spurs impinging the powerboat racer's spine. Dr. Janssen implanted DePuy Synthes' ProDisc Total Disc Replacement device. Mr. Teague was back on the water in four months and went on to win several races.

2. After falling six feet, powerboat race Gary Jones suffered a nasty hit to his skull. He reached out for medical advice, and Mr. Teague directed him to Dr. Janssen. Mr. Jones noted Dr. Janssen's impeccable bedside manner. Dr. Janssen removed Mr. Jones' C6-7 disc and also implanted the ProDisc. Mr. Jones started boating again within a few months.

3. International champion Bob Bull suffered years of back pain. He sought Dr. Janssen's care, and received personalized and quick treatment. Mr. Bull went on to win another world competition after treatment.

4. World record holder Reggie Fountain is no stranger to powerboat crashes, which resulted in a life of back pain. Dr. Janssen found Mr. Fountain had spinal stenosis and offered to perform minimally invasive spinal surgery. Mr. Fountain was back in his boat four weeks post-operation.
