A look into the demographic & clinical makeup of SCI patients at a hospital: 4 things to know

A Spinal Cord study analyzed the demographic and clinical characteristic of patients with spinal cord injury in a single center in Mexico, according to Nature. The researchers studied 433 patients with SCI, of which 346 had traumatic SCI and 87 had non-traumatic SCI.

Here are four things to know:

 

1. The study found the majority of patients with TSCI were involved in motor vehicle accidents.

 

2. Falls accounted for 30 percent of these patients and firearms were the cause in 16.8 percent of these patients.

 

3. Of those patients with NTSCI, 57.4 percent experienced tumoral cord compression. Degenerative disease resulting in myelopahty occurred in 19.5 percent of these patients.

 

4. The average age of patients with NTSCI proved higher than those with TSCI.
