Huntington Hospital uses Medtronic's O-arm for spinal surgery: 5 things to know

Spine

Huntington (N.Y.) Hospital surgeons performed Long Island's first spine surgery using Medtronic's O-arm Surgical Imaging System, according to Northwell Health.

Here are five things to know:

1. Robert Kerr, MD, PhD, performed the surgery to treat a patient's low back pain and lumbar sciatica.

2. The O-arm creates a three-dimensional computer model of a patient's spine.

3. The system significantly decreases radiation exposure with just one scan.

4. The O-arm decreases the need for revision surgery.

5. The technology may be beneficial for patients with spinal trauma, degenerative spondylosis, complex scoliosis and spine tumors.
