Outpatient spinal surgery on the rise: 4 notes

Spine

Justin Park, MD, a spine surgeon at Baltimore-based Mercy Medical Center said recent innovations in spine surgery have allowed the surgeons to increasingly perform spine surgery in the outpatient setting, according to WBALTTV 11.

Here are four notes:

1. Nearly one-third of Dr. Park's patients leave the day of the procedure.

2. Many patients feel relieved they can recover at home, as opposed to a hospital.

3. Dr. Park recommends outpatient surgery for procedures taking 90 minutes or less.

4. "Age is not a factor," Dr. Park said. "I have 20-year-old patients as well as 70-year-old patients who go home on the day of surgery."
