4 things to know about United Spinal member suing ferry for unlawful accessibility

David Heard, a member of the United Spinal Association, is suing Statue Cruises for not offering safe and lawful ferry access for wheelchair users.

Here are four things to know:

 

1. This failure violates the Americans with Disabilities Act and the New York State and New York City Human Rights Laws.

 

2. The United Spinal president and CEO wrote to the National Park Service, calling for changes to meet the law's requirements.

 

3. The Superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument refused to ask Statue Cruises to make changes, claiming the ferry is compliant with accessibility laws.

 

4. Paralyzed veterans founded the nonprofit organization, United Spinal. Its members include Americans with spinal cord injuries and disorders.
