Spine

Doug Coatsworth, PhD, of Fort Collins-based Colorado State University, and Alissa Wicklund, PhD, of Fort Collins-based Orthopaedic & Spine Center of the Rockies, will conduct a concussion study. National Collegiate Athletic Association and the U.S. Department of Defense are funding the study, according to Colorado State University.

The NCAA-DoD Mind Matters Challenge is funding eight research projects focused on concussions in athletics and the military.

Here are five notes:

1. Dr. Coatsworth is a professor and director of CSU's Prevention Center. Dr. Wicklund is a neuropsychologist and concussion specialist.

2. The pair will use $400,000 over a three-year period to study the underreporting of concussions in 12 middle and high schools in Colorado.

3. Inconsistencies exist in how different sports view and report concussions.

4. The researchers will conduct interviews and collect surveys to develop a new "culture of concussion reporting."

5. The NCAA-DoD Mind Matters Challenge will grant a total of $7 million for research.
