Carson campaign shakedown: Top aides quit Dr. Ben Carson's presidential campaign — 6 points

Spine

Two top aides to Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson have resigned, according to a Reuters report.

Here are six points:

1. Barry Bennett, the campaign manager, and Doug Watts, the communications director, have both quit along with around 20 other campaign staff members.

2. Both aides reportedly quit due to differences with another top advisor to Dr. Carson, Armstrong Williams.

3. Mr. Williams is a political commentator, and he does not have an official role with the campaign.

5. Dr. Carson now places fourth in a number of national polls, ahead of the Iowa caucus on Feb. 1.

6. In a CNN interview, Dr. Carson claims that the staff members who left could not execute their good ideas.

"We have had very good people that had very good ideas and no one predicted that we would even be in the hunt," said Dr. Carson on CNN. "It really is quite spectacular what we were able to do. But the fact of the matter is now we're in a different ballgame and we need the ability to execute and not just have good ideas."
