Dr. Bryan Massoud, others create back pain documentary: 5 things to know

Spine

Bryan Massoud, MD, is one of the creative forces behind a new documentary about back pain called "On the Floor."

The documentary covers chronic back pain sufferers with dramatic stories and education on preventative programs in spine health and wellness, touching on conventional and non-conventional treatment methods. Here are five key notes:

1. The documentary has 60 percent of the production complete and producers are currently screening candidates for the final few segments of the documentary. The filming is scheduled for the early part of 2016 in New York and New Jersey.

2. The documentary is told through first-person accounts of back pain patients, including professional athletes. The subjects touch on back pain’s physical and psychological limitations, including social isolation, weight gain, substance abuse and job loss.

3. Back pain affects 80 percent of Americans at some point in their lives; Dr. Massoud and his colleagues hope the documentary will help others understand the journey back pain patients go through and how to prevent similar issues in the future.

4. The documentary doesn’t sell or promote specific physicians, products or services. It does cover solutions that work for the people who are highlighted. Proceeds from the documentary will go toward back pain research and support for families of back pain sufferers.

5. Dr. Massoud founded Spine Centers of American and has a special interest in minimally invasive spine surgery. He underwent a spine surgery fellowship at Texas Back Institute and has experience with both open and endoscopic spine surgery techniques.
