Congress seeks to change pain management for veterans — 5 key notes on the PROMISE Act

To promote safety, advocacy and access to quality care, Congress is proposing the Promoting Responsible Opioid Management and Incorporating Scientific Expertise Act, according to National Pain Report.

Here are five key notes:

 

1. Representative Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), introduced the PROMISE Act, which is gaining support from Republicans and Democrats.

 

2. The legislation requires the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and United States Department of Defense to update their Clinical Practice Guidelines for Management of Opioid Therapy for Chronic Pain.

 

3. The bill also calls for VA opioid prescribers to undergo more pain management and safe opioid prescribing education and training.

 

4. The PROMISE Act intends for the VA to increase information sharing with state licensing boards.

 

5. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and Paralyzed Veterans of America support the legislation.
