Are EHRs worth it? Here's how it's helped 2 spine surgeons build their practices

Spine

Here two spine surgeons weigh in how an electronic health record has proved useful for their practice.

Ask Spine Surgeons is a weekly series of questions posed to spine surgeons around the country about clinical, business and policy issues affecting spine care. We invite all spine surgeon and specialist responses.

Next week's question: Are you planning to make additions to your practice staff in the coming year as a result of ICD-10 implementation?

Please send responses to Anuja Vaidya at avaidya@beckershealthcare.com by Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 5 p.m. CST.

Question: Does your practice have an EHR? Has it proved beneficial?

Mark Nolden, MD, NorthShore Orthopaedic Institute, Chicago: The implementation of electronic health records in recent years has proved most beneficial in connecting quickly with primary care physicians and their records to get the most up-to-date and accurate information on our patients. PCPs have the best medical history on their patients. With detailed notes on medications, histories and past surgical procedures, surgeons have immediate access to the information we need to best treat our patients.

EHRs have become a crucial communications tool in connecting with internal medicine specialists, family physicians and other healthcare providers in a fast-paced medical environment.

Richard Kube, MD, Founder, CEO, Prairie Spine & Pain Institute, Peoria, Ill.: We use GE Centricity. It does make information management much easier. It took a lot of effort, but once the reporting templates were finalized we had a much greater ability to look at numbers and truly see what was happening in our practice. It also just made calculating production bonuses more automatic. We have integrated that with other technologies in our office to be able to cut staff. In general, it has been well worth the cost.
