Here are 15 spine surgeons who recently received awards or promotions.

Cerebrotech Medical Systems added Nathan Selden, MD, PhD, to its scientific advisory board. Dr. Selden is the incoming chairman of the department of neurological surgery and the Campagna Chair of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine in Portland.

 

Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit named Sandeep Mittal, MD, chairman of the department of neurosurgery.

 

Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine neurosurgeon Christopher Loftus, MD, became an honorary citizen of Changzhou, China. He received this honor for his medical education program that connects Loyola's medical school and the First People's Hospital of Changzhou.

 

The North American Spine Society elected Christopher Bono, MD, as its new president. He plans to focus on the North American Spine Foundation, NASS Registry Pilot Project and coverage policy recommendations.

 

Gaurav Raj Dhakal, MBBS, MS, received the 2015 Clinical Traveling Fellowship for Washington University Medical Center, Icahn School of Medicine Mount Sinai, Nicklaus Children's Hospital. The North American Spine Society awarded the fellowship.

 

Narihito Nagoshi, MD, PhD, of the University of Toronto in Canada was awarded the $7,000 2015 Research Traveling Fellowship, given by the North American Spine Society.


Frank J. Eismont, MD, received the North American Spine Society's Leon Wiltse Award for leadership and/or clinical research in spine care.

 

David A. Wong, MD, received the North American Spine Society's Past President Award, which recognizes a former NASS president who made exceptional contributions to the society and its mission, and continues to provide service to the society.

 

Jeffrey J. Wise, MD, received the Spine Advocacy Award for the NASS member who made exceptional contributions to federal advocacy efforts on behalf of patients and society members.

 

Sang-Ho Lee, MD, chairman of Wooridul Spine Hospital in Korea, received the Parviz Kambin Award at the North American Spine Society meeting. He was honored for his excellence in endoscopic spinal surgery.

 

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine named Allan Levi, MD, chair of the neurological surgery department.

 

The National Academy of Medicine elected Frances E. Jensen, MD, to its membership. Dr. Jensen is the chair of the neurology department and co-director of the Penn Medicine Translation Neuroscience Center at the Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

 

The Medical Tourism Association honored Daniel Kelly, MD, for excellence in international oncology.

 

Christopher Loftus, MD, of Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill. will serve on a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee.

 

Overlake Hospital in Bellevue, Wash., opened its new neuroscience institute, headed by Neurosurgeon Abhineet Chowdhary, MD.
