Dr. Christopher Bono takes the helm at NASS with big plans for the future

Christopher Bono, MD, was elected president of the North American Spine Society at the annual meeting held this week.

"It has been my privilege to serve NASS in many different capacities," said Dr. Bono. "It will be an honor to help lead this incredible organization, along with a superb board of directors and group of committee chairs and members. The next 12 months assuredly will present some unique and unanticipated challenges. I look forward to facing them head on with our membership."

Over the next year, Dr. Bono plans to focus on the North American Spine Foundation, NASS Registry Pilot Project and coverage policy recommendations.

The North American Spine Foundation, launched last year, awarded its first two research grants to the Children's Spine Foundation totaling more than $31,000 together. The projects focus on the financial burden and parental impact of dealing with the early onset scoliosis as well as the incidence of spinal deformity. The foundation was launched to promote an integrative and collaborative care system including diagnostic, surgical, nonsurgical, perioperative and preventative measures to achieve function restoration.

The NASS registry pilot is underway now and members will have a chance to join in the future. Dan Resnick, MD, Zoher Ghogawala, MD, and Charlie Reitman, MD, have taken the lead on the pilot project, which includes both operative and non-operative patients.

Dr. Bono previously chaired the coverage committee and the new chairs — Scott Kreiner, MD, and John Glaser, MD, will take the project to the next level. NASS released the first coverage eBook covering current policy recommendations. Subscribers will have access to future coverage updates.

"These are just three of many important initiatives which we should not overshadow the other tremendous work in education, advocacy, health policy and ethics," said Dr. Bono. "An army of volunteers and staff work fiercely every day for the betterment of patients and NASS members."

In addition to his new role with NASS, Dr. Bono is the deputy editor for CME for the Journal of the Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and past deputy editor for The Spine Journal. He joined the organization in 2002 and has been involved with several committees.

Dr. Bono serves as co-director of Massachusetts General Hospital-Brigham and Women's Hospital orthopedic spine surgery fellowship and co-director of the BWH Comprehensive Spine Center. He earned his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical School and completed orthopedic residency at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical in Newark. His additional training includes a spine surgery fellowship at the University of California San Diego with Steve Garfin, MD, and Christopher Kauffman, MD.
