Spine

The North American Spine Foundation plans to award two research grants to the Children's Spine Foundation. Here are five key notes on the award.

1. The organization will receive one grant for research into pediatric spinal deformity incidence and another to investigate the financial burden and parental impact on families dealing with early onset scoliosis.

2. The grants total more than $31,000 all together with $23,060 going toward the "Financial Burden and Parental Impact in Families Dealing with Early Onset Scoliosis" project and $8,400 going toward "Incidence of Spinal Deformity" project.

3. The primary investigator for the financial burden study is Michael G. Vitale, MD, and the primary investigator for the spinal deformity incidence study is Jeffrey Sawyer, MD.

4. The North American Spine Foundation was created last year to promote the virtues and benefits of integrative and collaborative spine care and aims to build bridges between all shareholder groups.

"We are excited to fund two areas of inquiry: how common is the disease and what is its impact on the families supporting these kids?" said Raymond Golish, MD, chair of NASF Research Committee. "To be able to help children get the very best outcomes, we need to understand how common the problem is and get a handle on the emotional and financial issues their families are going through."
