Opioid-related deaths outnumber highway casualties — 4 things to know

In Virginia, more people died from heroin and opioid use than highway fatalities last year, according to News-Plex.

Here are four things to know:

 

1. In 2014, 728 Virginians died from drug overdoses compared to 700 highway fatalities.

 

2. In 2013, 741 Virginia residents died from highway accidents and 661 people died from drug overdoses.

 

3.  There were 750 traffic deaths in 2009 compared to 504 heroin and opioid-related deaths.

 

4. Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring launched an effort last year to increase efforts to attack heroin use in the state.
