California independent living centers offering resources to people with spinal cord injuries: 5 key points

Spine

Southern California Resource Services for Independent Living is one of 28 California independent living centers providing resources for people with spinal cord injuries.

Here are five key points:

1. The living center is offering assistive technology including scooters, wheelchairs, remote controls and accessible keyboards, so patients can lead more independent lives.

2. People can also attend workshops, which focus on enhancing brain activity for spinal cord repair and improving sensations and movements.

3. The center is partnering with Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Downey, Calif., to offer these services.

4. The Spinal Injury Games offers those in wheelchairs the opportunity to play sports.

5. The center is also appealing to stakeholders with a documentary explaining the need for accessible sidewalks and curb cuts in Los Angeles County.

"In serving people with SCIs, staff members reflect our philosophy of supporting persons with disabilities to transform their lives by making their own choices on how they live, work and participate in their communities," said Mario Galdmez, interim executive director, Southern California Resource Services for Independent Living.
