Neurosurgeon John A. Jane Sr., MD, PhD, died Sept. 18, 2015, according to UVA Today.

Here are eight points on Dr. Jane:

 

1. Dr. Jane died at 83 years old.

 

2. He began his career at UVa's School of Medicine in 1969, where he served as chair of the neurosurgery department until 2006.

 

3. Dr. Jane served as the director of the residency program until 2014.

 

4. A former director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery, Dr. Jane also served as president of Neurological Surgeons.

 

5. He most recently received the Governor's Public Service Award for Career Achievement in 2014.

 

6. Dr. Jane founded the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, and the Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics.

 

7. After receiving his medical degree from University of Chicago School of Medicine, Dr. Jane did a neurosurgery residency at University of Chicago Clinics and at Royal Victoria Hospital-McGill University in Montreal. He also completed a residency at the Illinois Neuropsychiatric Institute.

 

8. He completed fellowships in neurophysiology and neuropathology at the Montreal Neurological Institute, and a fellowship in cerebral vascular research at Atkinson Morleys Hospital in London, England.
