Mateo Ziu, MD, is traveling next week to meet Pope Francis, inspired by Mother Teresa and the role she played in his life, according to a KXAN report.

1. Dr. Ziu was born and raised in Albania, where Mother Teresa took him under her wing and helped him complete his medical education.

 

2. According to Dr. Ziu, "To me Pope Francis is very close to what Mother Teresa was. Being very open and talking to everybody."

 

3. Dr. Ziu is a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon with Seton Brain & Spine Institute in Austin.

 

4. He focuses on treating conditions such as skull base pathologies, traumatic and degenerative spine disease, traumatic brain injury and peripheral nerve disorders.

 

5. He completed a neuro-oncology fellowship at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
