Dr. Michael Gleiber praises AAFP Foundation and NFL Foundation partnership: 5 things to know

Spine

American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons spokesman Michael Gleiber, MD, FAAOS, supports the new partnership between the American Academy of Family Physicians and the National Football League.

Here are five things to know:

1. The two foundations came together to raise awareness about the risks of concussions.

2. AAFP Foundation will combine its medical knowledge with the NFL Foundation's resources to spread the message that concussions can be managed.

3. Dr. Gleiber of Concierge Spine Surgery in West Palm Beach, Fla., offered advice on how to manage concussions.

4. He said athletes should not push themselves and step off the field if injured, and people should learn all the symptoms of concussions aside from losing consciousness.

5. Medical attention should always be sought, and football players should not return to play without medical clearance, according to Dr. Gleiber.

"Leagues, schools, parents, coaches, trainers, players and the medical community must work together to ensure that all concussions are identified, reported and treated properly," said Dr. Gleiber. "I applaud the new partnership between the AAFP Foundation and the NFL Foundation, and expect that it will make a positive difference."
