According to Jackson & Coker's 2015 Physician Salary Calculator, the national average compensation for a full-time orthopedic surgeon totals $552,696, average benefits total $110,539 and total average compensation is $663,235. The national average hourly compensation is $265.

 

Spine Team Texas opens 6th location
David Garrigues, MD, joined the practice and will open the new clinic in Allen, Texas, later this month. The new clinic is located on the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen campus and will be open five days per week. Spine Team Texas, which opened in 2004 in Southlake, Texas, now has six clinics across the state.

 

Spine dominating global orthopedic products market: forecast to 2020
Research and Markets released a report that predicts the global orthopedics products market will reach almost $47 billion by 2020. Sports injuries, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, obesity and the growing geriatric population will contribute to this growth. Spine holds the maximum share of the global orthopedic market, with knee, hip, sports medicine, trauma and dental implants following sequentially.

Nine of the most pressing problems with technology that physician practices face, according to the 2015 Technology Survey by Physician's Practice are: drop in productivity due to EHRs, lack of interoperability between EHRs, EHR adoption and implementation, meeting meaningful use requirements, costs to implement and use new technology, keeping up with new technologies, resistance to technology adoption by physicians, keeping up with HIPAA privacy regulations and training staff.

 

SeaSpine reports $17.7M net loss in Q2
SeaSpine reported $33.5 million in revenue for the second quarter of 2015, a 6 percent decrease over the same period last year. Orthobiologics revenue is projected to increase 1 percent to $17 million. The spinal fusion hardware revenue will be down 13 percent to $16.5 million for the second quarter. Net loss was $17.7 million, up from a $5.4 million net loss over the same period last year. The company does not expect to incur significant amounts of spinoff and transition service costs in future years.

 

InVivo adds New Jersey's Cooper Neurological as clinical site
InVivo Therapeutics added Cooper Neurological Institute in Camden, N.J. as a new clinical site for its Neuro-Spinal Scaffold investigational study. The device is used for acute spinal cord injury treatment. Steven Yocom, DO, professor of neurosurgery and co-director of Cooper Neurological Institute, is the principal investigator at the new site.

 

$2.2B by 2019: trends in the Asia-Pacific spine surgery devices market
The Asia-Pacific region is one of the fastest growing regions for medical devices. The market is expected to reach $2.2 billion value by 2019 and grow at a compound annual growth rate of 10.5 percent from 2014 to 2019. The market growth is primarily due to the increasing incidents of spinal deformities among the aging population in the region as well as the popularity of non-fusion devices. Stryker, DePuy Synthes Companies of Johnson & Johnson, Smith & Nephew and Tornier lead the market.

 

Misonix supports Uganda spine surgery mission for 4th year
Misonix, an international surgical device company, will support the Uganda Spine Surgery Mission for the fourth consecutive year. Isador Lieberman, MD, of Texas Back Institue in Plano, and Mark Kajanja, MD, founded the mission in 2006 to provide spine care to Ugandan patients. The spine surgeons used the BoneScalpel for the procedures.

 

Spinal deformity correction: 3-column osteotomy
Researchers examined whether the deformity angulation ratio can assess neurologic risks in patients undergoing surgical correction for spinal deformity, in a Spine study. Data gathered from 35 pediatric spinal deformity correction procedures with three column-osteotomies revealed that the sagittal curve magnitude and total curve magnitude were associated with increased transcranial motor-evoked potential changes. Researchers concluded that identifying the accurate patient and procedural risk factors in severe deformity correction can prepare the surgical team to improve safety and outcomes for complex procedures.
