6 notes on Dr. Carl Lauryssen's move to NeuroTexas

NeuroTexas welcomed board-certified spine surgeon Carl Lauryssen, MD, to its team. He will hold appointments and perform surgeries at Lakeway Regional Medical Center, bolstering the center's neurological presence in Central Texas. Lakeway Regional Medical will be at the frontline of clinical trials in neurosurgery.

Here are six notes:

 

1. The first neurosurgeon to inject stem cells into a human spinal cord, Dr. Lauryssen has also served as investigator on more than a dozen spine-related research trials.

 

2. The American Association of Neurological Surgeons twice awarded Dr. Lauryssen the Young Investigator Award for his work on cervical disorders and stem cell research.

 

3. Prior to his appointment at NeuroTexas, he was the co-director of spine research and development at Olympia Medical Center.

 

4. Dr. Lauryssen is a founding member of the Minimally Invasive Spine Society.

 

5. He is a Fellow of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as well as a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery.

 

6. Dr. Lauryssen received his medical degree from University of Cape Town in South Africa. He did a neurosurgical residency at The University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada a spinal neurosurgical surgery fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine.

 

"Patients appreciate being advised of the variety of methods to manage their spinal disorder, some of which are not surgical," said Dr. Lauryssen. "…I want patients to understand that they have more options that are minimally invasive if they are seen by a specialist early in the process."
