NASS releases adult isthmic spondylolisthesis guidelines — 4 key notes

Spine

The North American Spine Society released evidence-based guidelines for diagnosing and treating adult isthmic spondylolisthesis.

"Staying current on research in the growing field of spine care is tough for today's busy spine specialists," said D. Scott Kreiner, MD, co-chair of the NASS Evidence-Based Guideline Development Committee. "This handy online document provides a quick, yet comprehensive foundation from which to base effective therapy for patients, backed by the strongest available evidence."

Here are four things to know:

1. The guideline makes recommendations for key clinical questions surrounding diagnosing and treating adult isthmic spondylolisthesis.

2. The guideline is not a fixed treatment protocol and doesn't represent the standard of care; instead it is "intended to reflect contemporary treatment concepts for adult isthmic spondylolisthesis."

3. The recommendations are based on clinical literature available as of June 2013.

4. There were 20 physicians involved in developing the guidelines, including spine surgeons, non-surgical spine specialists and nonphysician practitioners.
