Kiva VCF for spinal fractures a cost-effective treatment: 5 things to know

Spine

Benvenue Medical reported results from the Kiva VCF Treatment System for back pain, showing the device has substantial cost and resource savings for hospitals over balloon kyphoplasty.

Here are five key findings in the randomized study trial:

1. The KIVA system showed more than 30 percent reduction in adjacent-level fractures, which translates to fewer reoperations for patients and reduced costs for the healthcare system.

2. The Kiva System resulted in a $1,118 direct medical cost saving per patient over balloon kyphoplasty.

3. Kiva can save $280,876 per hospital in direct medical costs.

4. The Kiva VCF Treatment System is an implant-based approach to vertebral augmentation for painful VCFs, indicated for spinal fracture patients in the thoracic and/or lumbar spine. The system is used in combination with the Benvenue Vertebral Augmentation Cement Kit.

5. Kiva Systems include a proprietary implant that is flexible and made from PEEK-OPTIMA.

"In today's healthcare environment, new technology must both improve patient outcomes and add economic value for our facility," said J. Kevin McGraw, MD medical director interventional radiology at Riverside Methodist Hospital.
