FirstHealth Neurosurgery surgeons perform 2-level disc replacements: 5 things to know

Spine

FirstHealth Neurosurgery is using a new device for two-level cervical disc replacement surgery, according to a Your Daily Journal report.

Here are five things to know:

1. FirstHealth surgeons Dennis Campbell, MD, Larry Carson, MD, and Bruce Jauffman, MD, are the only surgeons in the region performing two-level cervical disc replacement using the Mobi-C. LDR's Mobi-C is the only cervical disc FDA-approved for two-level procedures.

2. The surgeons are performing disc replacement as an alternative to spinal fusion in appropriately-indicated patients.

3. An FDA trial showed there was an overall success rate of 69.7 percent for the cervical discs, compared with a 37.4 percent success rate with fusion.

4. The study also showed patients undergoing two-level disc replacements were able to return to work three weeks earlier on average than those who underwent fusion.

5. There are fewer complications and reoperations with the artificial discs when compared with fusion, according to the report.
