The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation awarded the 2015 Clinical Research Award to Stuart L. Weinstein, MD, and Lori Dolan, PhD, for their work on adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, according to an AAOS Now report.

The award-winning paper, titled "The Evidence Base for the Prognosis and Treatment of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis," followed AIS patients from childhood through adulthood provides an evidence basis for patients and their families to make informed decisions about scoliosis treatment.

The study has Level 1 evidence showing how effective bracing is to reduce curve progression. This could change future healthcare policy and the U.S. Preventative Task Force's recommendations for screening asymptomatic children for scoliosis.

Dr. Weinstein is the Ignacio V. Ponseti Chair and professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
